Shoen-gama is a kiln where Bizen ware is made in a setting wrapped in the flowers of all four seasons — pieces that let you feel the beauty of nature.
I am Masako Buyo, and I make Bizen ware at Shoen-gama. Founded in 1971, our kiln uses traditional techniques to offer a wide range of work — everyday pieces, flower vases, sake ware — at reasonable prices. My work draws on the natural fired colors of the clay, and treasures beauty that lives within daily life.
My main style is Bizen ware that makes the most of those natural fired colors. The forms are simple, but I am particular about how they feel in the hand, and I design them to suit everyday use.
I knead the clay, raise the form, wait for it to dry, and fire it in a climbing kiln. I pay especially close attention to temperature control in that kiln, testing again and again to draw out natural fired colors. I am just as particular about the finishing after firing, working each piece carefully by hand so that no two are alike.
At Shoen-gama we aim to make pieces that suit modern life while protecting the tradition of Bizen ware. I put my heart into the colors and textures of nature in my work, so that you feel the pleasure of using it day to day.
Bizen City in Okayama Prefecture is known as the home of Bizen ware. The tradition has been handed down here since ancient times, and the quality of the clay and the firing techniques developed alongside it. The local natural environment is what gives Bizen ware its distinctive character, and it is still loved by many people today.
