About this Work
Shimizu Yayoi's Small Round Plate is a yakishime plate about 10.5 cm across. On this one, a single scarlet line, like a quick brushstroke in the shape of the Japanese character for "person", runs across a light clay-colored center. The open scene, with much of the surface left empty, is striking. It is made with hidasuki, a technique in which straw is wrapped around the piece before firing so that scarlet lines appear, and the chance lines drawn by flame and straw are different on every plate. On the back, thick scarlet lines cross, showing a different face from the front. Use it for condiments, delicacies or a bite of Japanese sweets, as a small accent on the table. Unglazed yakishime pottery settles into a soft, moist-looking surface the more it is used, and its character deepens over time.
