About nokaze
One good piece can change a whole table. We carry handmade Japanese ceramics by more than forty artisans and kilns from across Japan, and we are happy to tell you who made each one, where, and why. Knowing the story makes everyday meals feel more your own.
Shelves with room to breathe. Take your time, pick things up, and choose for yourself.
Four seasons in the gallery
Branches in the vases and pieces on the shelves follow the season, so the room is never the same twice.

We carry glass as well as ceramics. In summer, hand-blown glasses and blue glazes move to the front, against white walls and green branches. A cooler corner of a hot Kyoto afternoon.
Hand-blown glass, shaped one piece at a time.

Autumn is the season for long tea breaks in Kyoto. One small plate and one cup are an easy way to begin.
A rim shaped like flower petals, common on small plates for sweets.

Snow settles on Okazaki only a few days a year. On those white mornings our lights are on as usual. When the new year comes, a shimekazari hangs under our sign to welcome it.
A rice-straw New Year decoration hung by the door.
Inside the house
Through the brick doorway: a long table beneath the mural and warm lamps, rounded niches in charcoal plaster, and seasonal flowers among the pieces.

Pieces are grouped by the artisan who made them. Like one plate? The rest of that artisan's work is close by.
Weight, texture, how a rim feels on your lips. Things a photo can't show. Please pick pieces up.
Who made it, in which town, inspired by what. We'll tell you the artisan's story on their behalf.
Art in the house ·

The mural behind our counter was painted by OVER ALLs, the Tokyo-based mural team behind walls across Japan. A hand opening a book across the plaster: our name, a house of ceramics and stories, in one picture. Come and see it in person.

The name ·
Two names with the same sound live inside ours.
No, the field: Japanese craft born from clay, wood and fire. Kaze, the wind: the way we live now. We carry traditional work on today's wind, to today's table.
Nokaze is also the name of a flute that passed through the hands of Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu, the three men who unified Japan. Like that flute, we want to pass Japanese culture on, hand to hand, across generations.

Our mark layers the rims of five pieces of pottery into a cherry blossom, the flower of Japanese tradition. Its color is the brown of the clay every piece begins as.
