About this Work
Shimizu Yayoi's Mug (Button) is a yakishime mug with a simple form that widens gently toward the base, finished with a small round button. The thin line drawn down from the button looks a little like a plant, a playful design. This one has a beautiful ochre gradation on a reddish-brown ground, made by the way the flame struck it, and the inside is finished in a light clay color. At about 200 ml, it is just the right size for savoring coffee or black tea one cup at a time. The handle gives your fingers a firm hold, keeping you company through your daily breaks. Unglazed yakishime pottery settles into a soft, moist-looking surface the more it is used, and its character deepens over time.
