About this Work
Shimizu Yayoi's Small Round Plate is a palm-sized yakishime plate about 10.5 cm across. It is made with hidasuki, a technique in which straw is wrapped around the piece before firing so that scarlet lines appear, and on this one a lively zigzag line runs across a light clay-colored center. The rim is a dark brown from passing through the flame, and the rough texture of the clay sets off the soft color in the middle. Scarlet lines in a grid also appear on the back, so you can enjoy a different face each time you pick it up. Use it for pickles, condiments, Japanese sweets, or as a tray for accessories. A set in different patterns also works well as individual plates for each person. Unglazed yakishime pottery settles into a soft, moist-looking surface the more it is used, and its character deepens over time.
