After graduating from Musashino Art Junior College I was drawn to Bizen ware, and I now hand-build pieces that add color to everyday life.
I treasure a warmth that settles into the hands of the person using it, and I pursue forms that are simple and still have real presence.

About this Work
Shimizu Yayoi's Small Round Plate is a yakishime plate about 10.5 cm across that sits in the palm of your hand. On this one, three short scarlet lines line up in an arc across a light clay-colored center, a light, airy scene. It is made with hidasuki, a technique in which straw is wrapped around the piece before firing so that scarlet lines appear, and the contrast with the dark brown rim sets off the soft color in the middle. On the back, scarlet lines overlap like a net, so there is something new each time you pick it up. It is just the right size for a little something, such as pickles, tsukudani, nuts or chocolate. Unglazed yakishime pottery settles into a soft, moist-looking surface the more it is used, and its character deepens over time.
