A wood and lacquer artisan living in Hiroshima.
In my own studio I carry out everything from the design through to the choice of materials such as wood and washi paper, the turning on the lathe, and the finishing work of lacquering and paper-laying. The numbers are small, but I make bowls and vessels finished in wiped lacquer, plates and trays with a glass coating, and washi-covered trays and oshiki, all with an atmosphere that has not existed before.
I care particularly about texture. Rather than the evenness of lacquerware, I try to bring out the grain of the wood and the washi as far as they will go.
At the same time I keep to the fact that these are everyday things for everyday use, and aim at designs that put ease of use ahead of beauty.
