About this Work

Rice Bowl / Ooze Blue

Because it is something used at the table every day, this rice bowl was made with as much thought for how it feels in the hand as for how it looks.

Over a base of soft ivory glaze, the outside is cut line by line with the facets called shinogi.

For Ooze Blue, a metal that comes out blue is then brushed over that.

Fired in the kiln, the blue bleeds into the glaze, running as it builds light and dark.

In places it turns a pale, soft blue; in others a deeper blue stays.
The brushed line does not simply remain as drawn — it shifts as it reacts with the glaze, so several expressions of blue appear within a single bowl.

How it runs and how the colour deepens differs from one piece to the next, so even made the same way, no two come out with the same landscape.

A gentle ivory ground, with the cool character of blue.

It does not assert itself when rice is served into it, and the colour is easy to bring to an everyday table.

The form, too, was worked out for daily use.

The shinogi on the outside is decoration and grip at once, and beside the foot there is a small hollow where the thumb settles naturally.

Serving the rice. Picking it up. Bringing it to your lips.

It is finished so that ease of use is felt inside those everyday movements.

Ooze means to seep out, to flow slowly.

The blue added with the brush bleeds into the glaze, and the landscape appears as it runs.

We hope you enjoy the different expression of blue in each one, as you use it at the table day by day.

Artisan Story

Born in Nara Prefecture in 1993. Established a studio in Yamashina Ward, Kyoto City. At university and graduate school, I studied clinical psychology, researching the theme of "what is my true self?" While still in graduate school, I worked as a part-time public servant in a psychology-related field, and on weekends, my greatest pleasure was visiting pottery markets in various regions and collecting ceramics. I started pottery during my time as a graduate student. I entered this world after asking a potter I met at an event if they would teach me pottery in exchange for helping them with their work. Afterwards, I studied at Seizan Toen in Higashiyama, Kyoto, and the Kyoto Prefectural Ceramics Training School, and after working at a pottery studio, I became independent. Currently, I create ceramics that harmonize gentleness and understated elegance, primarily using soft, creamy glazes, with black-brown or blue decorations on the rims. Perhaps my works are not born from an attempt to express myself, but rather a natural reflection of "my individuality" that has been gradually shaped through interactions with people. I strive daily to create ceramics that one naturally wants to pick up in everyday life, and that blend into one's lifestyle the more they are used. I hope to deliver such "just right" ceramics. 1993 Born in Nara Prefecture 2017 Began pottery, apprenticing under a potter 2018 Studied at Seizan Toen Pottery Class, Higashiyama 2019 Began production at Seizan Toen Joint Studio, Higashiyama 2022 Enrolled in Kyoto Prefectural Ceramics Training School 2023 Completed Kyoto Prefectural Ceramics Training School Worked at Sanko Seito Zuiho Kiln 2024 Became independent Ceramics adopted by "Sushi Ravis Osaka" at Four Seasons Hotel Osaka Featured in CLUÉL, December issue Currently Based in Yamashina Ward, Kyoto City, operating mainly in Kansai and Kanto regions through department stores, galleries, and restaurants.
