About this Work
Rice Bowl / Ooze Brown
Because it is something used at the table every day, this rice bowl was made with as much thought for how it feels in the hand as for how it looks.
Over a base of soft ivory glaze, the outside is cut line by line with the facets called shinogi.
For Ooze Brown, a metal that comes out black-brown is then brushed over that.
Fired in the kiln, the black-brown bleeds into the glaze, running as it builds light and dark.
In places it bleeds to a pale tan; in others a deep, near-black stays.
The colour added with the brush shifts as it reacts with the glaze, so several expressions of black-brown appear within a single bowl.
How it runs and how the colour deepens differs from one piece to the next, so even made the same way, no two come out with the same landscape.
A soft ivory ground, with the settled restraint of black-brown.
Rather than putting brightness first, the colour was chosen to sit naturally with rice, with food and with other pieces.
The form, too, was worked out for daily use.
The shinogi on the outside is decoration and grip at once, and beside the foot there is a small hollow where the thumb settles naturally.
Serving the rice. Picking it up. Bringing it to your lips.
Because these are movements repeated every day, the aim was a rice bowl that feels good the moment you take it in your hand.
Ooze means to seep out, to flow slowly.
The black-brown added with the brush bleeds into the glaze, and the landscape appears as it runs.
We hope it settles into your daily table as you use it, and that you enjoy the expression each piece carries.
