About this Work

The appeal lies in the deep black and gray gradations created by being slowly fired in charcoal. Without using glaze, the surface, fired only by the action of charcoal and flame, retains the flow of the fire and the traces of the charcoal as natural patterns, revealing a unique expression for each piece.

The soft roundness of the rim, and the thickness and weight that fit perfectly in the palm of your hand.
There is a definite gentleness within its ruggedness, and it is a piece that allows you to feel the warmth of the earth from your lips to your fingertips.

When hot water is poured, light penetrates the subtle shadows on the surface, and the carbonized texture becomes moist and lustrous.
Over time, hand oils and tea stains will blend in, and the texture will deepen with continued use.

Unadorned, quiet, simply beautiful. Ishikawa-san's pursuit of "the true form of ceramics" gently breathes within this teacup.

Artisan Story

I create yakishime (high-fired, unglazed) ceramic vessels that blend traditional techniques with a modern aesthetic.

Yakishime is a firing technique that does not use glaze. Instead, charcoal and the ceramic piece are placed in a sago pot and fired at high temperatures. The resulting colors are diverse, ranging from pale beige and gray gradations to striking white and black contrasts. Each vessel is unique, with no two having the same pattern or color. These vessels, born from a technique that maximizes the power of nature, reveal deeper beauty the more you observe them. Their beauty only enhances with use, allowing them to be cherished for a long time as a piece that accompanies your daily life.

Though characterized by a moist texture, these vessels are versatile for both everyday use and special occasions.
