Makai Rice Bowl, 4-sun No.1 — Okinawa

A "4-sun makai" carefully fired by Yokotaya Kiln in the traditional technique. "Makai" is Okinawan dialect for a bowl — a rice bowl — and a traditional form. It is marked by a solid, stable foot and a roundness that sits fully in the hand.
At approximately 12cm across (4 sun), the smaller size suits a modest serving of rice, or a rice bowl for a woman or a child. It also serves well for soup, as a small bowl, or as a udon bowl for children. Its plain bearing, full of the warmth of handwork, wraps the daily table in something gentle.
