About this Work

This exquisite furidashi showcases the unique surface of torched clay in harmony with a distinctive blue glaze. A furidashi is a small vessel used in the tea ceremony to hold kompeito (sugar candies) or bean snacks, which are served before the main sweets. Guests are invited to shake it to release its contents.

The surface is created by first applying patterns to the clay, then torching it with a burner. The clay expands and crumbles, creating a natural, organic texture. A white glaze is then applied over this, resulting in a one-of-a-kind design with striking black and white contrasts. Due to the resemblance of these contrasts to zebra stripes, this series is named the ZEBRA (ZB) series. A blue glaze is then added over this, evoking a cosmic, microcosmic atmosphere.

Beyond its formal use in tea ceremonies, it can be incorporated into daily life as a holder for kompeito, nuts, or accessories, or enjoyed as a small art piece that adds a sophisticated touch to any space.
