This is a Lazuli flat plate, with the expression of that one moment set into a single piece.

"Gengetsu" is a series in soft white, conceived from the moon quietly waxing and waning.

The calm wave pattern floating within the white shows the still expression of water lit by moonlight.

〜 A flat plate to enjoy right out to the empty space 〜

The rim is not raised; the plate is made as one almost entirely flat surface.

At approximately 21.5cm across, it is an easy size for the daily table — from a spread of hors d'oeuvres, cheese or cake to a light meal for one.

You can fill it with food, of course; or leave space on purpose, so the wave pattern shows between the ingredients and the landscape of the plate becomes part of the dish.

Make an everyday dish look a little special, or simply enjoy arranging it as you like.
It is a plate to put food on, and equally a stage to set a scene upon.

〜 No two waves are the same 〜

The wave pattern is expressed through a technique called inkoku, or incising: relief is worked into the surface of the clay and a white glaze laid over it, so the pattern emerges through variation in the depth of the glaze.

The rise and fall of the surface makes the glaze thicker in some places and thinner in others, and a soft wave rises within the white.

The glaze also shifts subtly in tone and expression according to its thickness and to how the heat reaches it in the kiln.

The same white may show as a soft milky tone, or let the shadow of a wave rise quietly.
That fluctuation creates a landscape like water lit by moonlight.

The way the pattern appears, and the depth and tone of the glaze, differ a little from piece to piece.

No two waves are ever the same.

On the character of handmade work

Because each piece is made by hand, colour and the way the wave pattern appears differ from one to the next.

You may also find variation in the depth of the glaze, unevenness of colour, crystal formation, black specks, pinholes, or grains of iron.

These too are the expression of a fired piece, born of clay, glaze and flame.

〜 Three series, three landscapes 〜

The round flat plate comes in three series: "Yoake — Daybreak", "Socho — Clear Morning" and "Gengetsu — Crescent Moon".

"Yoake" moves from deep lapis blue to pale blue, catching the moment light first reaches a darkened surface of water.

"Socho" moves from a translucent turquoise to deep lapis, recalling clear water glittering in the morning light.

"Gengetsu" lets a calm wave rise within soft white, reflecting still water lit by moonlight.

Within the same round form, each holds the landscape of a different hour, in different colour and different light.
