Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, is one of Japan's leading pottery production centers. In a workshop at the foot of its mountains, I create pottery with the theme of "capturing a moment of nature."
Among many things, I am drawn to waves, as no two are ever the same, and I incorporate their fleeting expressions into my vessels.
The wave patterns are expressed through a unique method born from repeated trial and error, creating the prototype of a wave from the clay itself and then imprinting its unevenness onto the surface of the vessel.
By inlaying clays of different colors and utilizing the shading of glazes created by the unevenness, I produce a three-dimensional wave that changes its expression with light, offering a depth different from painted designs.
Furthermore, I layer the colors of dawn and fleeting nature onto the blue gradation created by multiple applications of glaze.
Just as no two waves created by nature are alike, each handcrafted vessel also possesses a unique wave expression and glaze shading.

〜 Lazuli × SUNLIFE — Wave Chopsticks and Rests, Pair Gift Set 〜
Two wave landscapes,
born of two different crafts.
The wave of "Daybreak," stirring in deep lapis blue.
The wave of "Crescent Moon," floating on soft white.
The two scenes Lazuli has long set into ceramics are gathered here as a paired gift of chopsticks and rests.
Ceramic rests, and bamboo chopsticks.
Two materials and two techniques meeting through a single wave — that is where this collaboration began.
〜 From one wave, two crafts 〜
It started when a designer at the chopstick maker SUNLIFE happened upon a piece by Lazuli.
The wave stirring across the surface, worked in inlay, and the tone of the lapis glaze.
That scene became the idea: could this wave be expressed in the lacquer of a chopstick? And the making began.
The wave Lazuli draws in clay and glaze, SUNLIFE draws in bamboo and lacquer.
Two crafts, different in material and in method, expressing the same wave through their own techniques.
The chopsticks that emerged from repeated prototypes were then paired with Lazuli's ceramic rests.
Two crafts that began from one wave became a single gift.
〜 Daybreak and Crescent Moon — two wave landscapes 〜
"Daybreak"
Lazuli's signature series, conceived from the moment light first reaches a darkened surface of water.
The wave stirring within deep lapis calls to mind daybreak light falling across still water.
"Crescent Moon"
A series in soft white, conceived from the moon quietly waxing and waning.
The calm wave pattern floating in the white shows the still expression of water lit by moonlight.
The blue of daybreak, and the white of the moon.
The two scenes are placed in one box, as though resting beside one another.
〜 Sending someone "may good waves come" 〜
Lazuli's wave pattern carries a wish:
May good waves come.
That is the hope set into it.
May the days ahead bring calm waves and waves that quicken the heart.
And may each of them be savoured, one by one, as good days accumulate.
With that wish, two pairs of chopsticks and two rests are placed in a dedicated gift box.
For a wedding, a new home, an anniversary — for two people setting out on the days ahead together.

〜 The chopsticks and the rests, each by hand 〜
SUNLIFE's chopsticks take their idea from Lazuli's wave pattern, expressed through bamboo and lacquer technique.
The fine lines, overlapping as though flowing, answer the wave drawn in the ceramics.
The rests are made one at a time at Lazuli's studio in Seto, Aichi.
The relief of a wave formed from clay is taken onto the surface, then worked with inlay — clay of another colour set into it — layer upon layer, until the wave takes on depth.
No two waves are the same.

On the character of handmade work
Because each piece is made by hand, colour and the way the wave pattern appears differ from one to the next.
On the rests you may find variation in the depth of the glaze, unevenness of colour, crystal formation, black specks, pinholes, or grains of iron.
These too are the expression of each piece, born of the material and the hand that made it.
