About this Work
Shimizu Yayoi's Mug (A) is a mug fired unglazed (yakishime), letting you enjoy the expression of clay and flame just as it is. On a reddish-brown ground, a pattern of vertical lines carved all around the middle of the body gives it the rhythm of handwork. On this one, a gray scene, as if dusted with ash, has appeared near the base, letting you feel the flow of the flame inside the kiln. The rounded body is easy to wrap your palm around, and it holds about 320 ml. Use it generously every day, from morning coffee and café au lait to warm soup. It settles into your hand and its expression deepens the more you use it. Each piece is made by hand, so the shape and the way the fired surface turns out differ from one to the next.
