About this Work
Shimizu Yayoi's Small Round Plate is a yakishime plate about 10.5 cm across. On this one, many scarlet lines cross over a light clay-colored center, drawing shapes like stars and triangles, full of movement. It is made with hidasuki, a technique in which straw is wrapped around the piece before firing so that scarlet lines appear, and the strength and overlap of the lines show the expression of the flame. The rim is a rough, dark brown, with a plain texture that feels good in the hand. Use it as a soy sauce dish, a small serving plate or a plate for Japanese sweets. It is also fun to mix it with other patterns and choose one plate for each person in the family. Unglazed yakishime pottery settles into a soft, moist-looking surface the more it is used, and its character deepens over time.
