About this Work

Shimizu Yayoi's Small Round Plate is a small yakishime plate about 10.5 cm across. On this one, a few scarlet lines, as if drawn sideways and on the diagonal, line up across a light clay-colored center, a clean, simple scene. It is made with hidasuki, a technique in which straw is wrapped around the piece before firing so that scarlet lines appear, and no two patterns are the same. The rim is a deep dark brown that gives the whole plate a calm look. It is handy as a soy sauce or condiment dish, or as a plate for chocolate and dry sweets with tea. It is also fun to combine it with other patterns and line them up on the table. Unglazed yakishime pottery settles into a soft, moist-looking surface the more it is used, and its character deepens over time.
