About this Work
Shimizu Yayoi's Mug (A) is a mug fired unglazed (yakishime), whose charm is the feel of the clay itself. A carved pattern of vertical lines circles the middle of the body on a deep reddish-brown ground. A light clay color shows at the rim and handle, and the rough, plain texture feels good in the hand. This one is slightly tall and holds about 340 ml. It holds plenty, so besides coffee and black tea it suits slow moments with hojicha or hot milk. The calm color of yakishime fits both Japanese and Western tables, and gains character the more you use it. Each piece is made by hand, so the shape and the way the fired surface turns out differ from one to the next.
