About this Work
Shimizu Yayoi's Triangle Cup & Saucer is a yakishime set pairing a triangular saucer with rounded corners and a cup with small feet. On the cup, a reddish flame color spreads softly from top to bottom, and a pattern of dots joined by lines, like constellations, is carved into the body. In the center of the saucer, a scarlet hidasuki line, made by wrapping straw around the piece before firing, rises in a circle, and a playful touch lets the scene peek out when you set the cup down. It holds about 130 ml, perfect for espresso, Japanese tea or a little coffee. The saucer also looks lovely as a small plate for sweets. Unglazed yakishime pottery settles into a soft, moist-looking surface the more it is used, and its character deepens over time.
