After graduating from Musashino Art Junior College I was drawn to Bizen ware, and I now hand-build pieces that add color to everyday life.
I treasure a warmth that settles into the hands of the person using it, and I pursue forms that are simple and still have real presence.

About this Work
Shimizu Yayoi's Bread Plate (Mosaic) is a yakishime plate about 17.5 cm square, with rounded corners. On a brown ground, five light clay-colored square windows are set at slightly different angles, and scarlet lines run through each one. The mosaic pattern, like scattered tiles, brings a light rhythm to the table. It is made with hidasuki, a technique in which straw is wrapped around the piece before firing so that scarlet lines appear, and the lines turn out differently on every plate. The rim rises just enough, so it is an easy size for toast and croissants, baked sweets, as a serving plate, or for a small side dish. Unglazed yakishime pottery settles into a soft, moist-looking surface the more it is used, and its character deepens over time.
