Furutani Potters was established in 1970 by Nobuo Furutani. By applying white slip to our unique blend of iron-rich red clay and firing it twice at low temperatures, we create soft, powdered vessels. The "white" of our powdered ceramics is rustic and warm. It gently embraces any dish and pairs perfectly with other tableware. Additionally, guided by the theme "accompanying daily life," we subtly adapt our designs to fit various lifestyles, including food culture and living spaces. We create our pieces daily, believing that our simple and easy-to-use ceramics will surely enrich your life.
01. Enjoyable and Delicious Cooking
When food is served in a beautiful vessel, it truly shines. Even the same dish takes on a different appearance when the vessel changes. "What kind of dish should I serve in this vessel?" Your imagination expands, making cooking even more enjoyable.
02. Tableware You'll Want to Use Every Day
Our ceramics feature a rustic texture and simple design because we want you to use them every day. We design them to be lightweight, easy to hold, and just the right size, incorporating various ideas into their creation. We hope they become vessels that you "find yourself using every day."
03. Crafted with Heart
Every piece of Furutani Potters' tableware is meticulously handmade through each step of the process. We pour our hearts into crafting each piece, hoping to create even better vessels tomorrow than today, envisioning the smiles of those who will use them. Our soft, gentle handmade ceramics gently embrace your food.

About this Work
Rice bowls in two sizes, cups in two sizes, two flower-shaped deep plates — one grey, one rust — and one small bowl. A table for two, built entirely from Furutani Pottery.
The sizes differ because two pairs of hands differ. The deep plates hold anything with liquid in it; serve in the middle and leave a margin, and the petals frame the food.
What is in the set (7 pieces)
- Gosu Blue Line Rice Bowl, Large — approx. 11.5cm diameter × 7cm high
- Gosu Blue Line Rice Bowl, Small — approx. 10.5cm diameter × 6cm high
- Iron-Speckled Line-Carved Free Cup, Large — approx. 8.5cm diameter × 8.5cm high
- Iron-Speckled Line-Carved Free Cup, Small — approx. 8cm diameter × 7cm high
- Gray Glaze Foliate Rim Deep Plate, Small — approx. 15.5cm diameter × 2cm high
- Rust Glaze Foliate Rim Deep Plate, Small — approx. 15.5cm diameter × 2cm high
- Gosu Blue Line Rim Mame Bowl — approx. 11cm diameter × 4cm high
The gosu lines are drawn freehand in cobalt blue. Firing can bring up pink speckles — gohon — which soften the whole piece. The free cups widen at the rim and draw in at the foot, so they hold easily in one hand. Tea, coffee or sake.
About the maker
Shigaraki | Furutani Pottery
Founded in Shigaraki in 1970 by Furutani Nobuo. A red clay high in iron, blended in-house, is coated with white slip and fired twice at low temperature; that is where the soft kohiki white comes from. It is a plain, warm white rather than a bright one — it takes any food gently, and sits well next to other people’s work.
The theme the pottery works to is staying close to daily life: not too heavy, easy to hold, the right size — the forms shifting a little over the years to follow how people actually cook, eat and live. Every stage is done by hand. “Better today than yesterday, better tomorrow than today,” they write, “made with care, picturing the face of the person who will use it.” Food begins to shine once it is served on a piece of pottery; the same dish shows a different face when the dish under it changes.
Handwork, so some pieces sit with a slight wobble, and iron in the clay shows as small dark specks. Made the same way, no two come out the same.
